Site Introduction

The narrative inspired me so far was the Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM). The way people collecting, processing, finishing, transporting and storing Chinese herbs has a very delicate procedures. Each procedure has several objects involved such as jar, drawer, tank, suck and basket. Moreover, this whole diagram has many spatial perspectives as well. The person who going into the mountain to collect those herbs has to have a tent in case he/she might stay in this field for a few days as long with all these heavy herbs. A tent structure with a huge storage is needed. After that, the herbs have to be sun-dried for quite long-----a courtyard with enough sunlight. In the meanwhile, herbs have to be stored in drawers in order to sell and transport, so a proper package is essential to that. During the universal transportation, my plan is apply a standard package as well as storage mechanism to rewrite this story. And a local and an overseas medicine shops could be a physical experience through this new way of retailing and storing Traditional Chinese Medicine. That is to say, these two shops are demonstration of an alternative way of inhabit or utilize a traditional Chinese Medicine shop.
The diagram below shows a very basic procedure for one out of thousands medical herb, from where it could be picked up to a local or an overseas store. In the middle of this diagram, there is an illustration for the very old way of packaging those medicines. Similarly, as this inspired my a lot, the whole procedure for treating and transporting these herbs could be some thing like this package, but in a different kind of material, for example fabric or waterproof canvases. So these packages go with herbs to travel around and these packages might give certain herbs identity.

thoughts about practice

'Form describes the basic shape of any elements. Some object will immediately lend themselves to a specific form; a table, for example, has to be of a certain form in order for it to fulfil its function as a raised horizontal surface to put things on. The form of an object, both inside and outside, can dictate people's reactions to it and its ability to perform a task.' (103, form, The Visual Dictionary of interior Architecture and Design)
The beginning aim of my practice is to explore the relation between the function of specific object and its physical form. By finding alternative materials and change form of those objects, I move on to finding alternatives for a space. That is to say using alternative materials to build a space with unrecognisable form to achieve a transformation. For instance, using fabric to build a domestic interior, zips, buttons and pockets were elements for clothing and fashion, when those elements applied in interior architecture, those become a part of architectural language. This is a big shift from what people already acknowledged of certain object to something unknown.
The writings I have done is more about describe those ideas clearly. I also did some readings about Le Corbusier's book, measuring system ' the Modular'. The writings is going to talk also about how I am referencing this system to construct my model. The writing is also including Louis Henri Sullivan's idea of 'form forever follows function' as well as later Rodolfo Machado's debate that form follows form.

Moreover, the steel structure I am going to use will also be a part of my practice. The writing is reflecting my practice in certain way. My studio work is changing by the readings and thoughts, and writing help me to develop a theoretical support to correct my practice and placing myself in better position.
What I am considering, recently, is to finding sites. When come to some specific sites, the process of solving problems, adding narrative, applying alternative materials become more accessible and easier to resolve. Instead of doing some abstract test, what I am after is professional practice. The reason of having not only one site, is I could apply my idea into many spaces which means this alternative could be used not only under certain rare circumstance. For instance, I am now focus on small and movable space, like barge, caravan, student dorm as well as VW camper van. Those spaces need some certain solutions to transfer small to “big”.
